- FDE is the defining hire of the applied-AI era. Monthly postings for the role ran roughly 800% higher across 2025 by external trackers, and a16z calls it “the hottest job in tech.”
- The driver is a deployment gap, not a model gap. MIT research in 2025 found 95% of enterprise generative-AI pilots delivered no measurable business impact. The models work. Wiring them into a live business does not, unless an engineer is embedded to do it.
- The largest names are institutionalizing the function. - Regulated and sovereign demand. Defense (Rune, CACI, Cape), pharma and health (Novartis, Cigna, Medable), and sovereign AI (Mistral) are pulling FDEs into the highest-trust verticals.
